Rockford Fosgate RZR14-STG1 vs RZR14-STG2

The RZR14-STG3 is the most affordable and basic amplified stereo system that Rockford Fosgate offers for the Polaris RZR. This is the entry level system that comes with both an amplifier and a subwoofer. The RZR14-STG3 now includes the M1 series speakers and subwoofer with Rockford Fosgate's Color Optix RGB LEDs. The speakers and subwoofer are virtually the same as the previous generation, but they now include lights. For the amplifier, the RZR14-STG3 comes with an 800 watt, 4 channel amplifier that is IPX6 rated. The amplifier will deliver plenty of power to both the speakers and the subwoofer and it can get sprayed down with a hose and you have nothing to worry about. The RZR14-STG3 is ideal for 2 seat RZR's that don't need the rear, cage mounted speakers or for those looking that are on a budget, but looking for a stereo system that will still sound great.

The RZR14-STG2 is the most basic, four-speaker stereo system that you can install in a RZR while maintaining a factory OEM appearance. The RZR14-STG2 includes a PMX-1 head unit with a dash kit, front speakers and speaker pods, rear cage-mounted speakers, and a harness to connect everything together. The RZR14-STG2 comes with the Rockford Fosgate M0-65B speakers which are affordable, efficient, and ideal for use in a non-amplified system. The RZR14-STG2 does not include an amplifier and the speakers do not have the Color Optix RGB LEDs that the highe end kits come with.

The RZR14-STG1 does not include tower speakers.
The RZR14-STG2 comes with M0 6.5" speakers in the mini-tower cans to match the front speakers. The mini-tower cans are ideal for UTVs because they aren't as deep as traditional boat tower cans. This provides a better appearance than these super-deep cans hanging off the back of your RZR. Like the front speakers, the M0WL-65MB tower speakers are virtually the same as the previous generations. There are cosmetic differences, primarily with the open-style 6 spoke grille to match the front speakers. Also, there is a "Diamond R" Rockford Fosgate logo on the back that can spin 360-degrees to make sure that it is in the right direction, regardless of the angle that the speaker cans are mounted. The connections for both the speaker wire and the Color Optix RGB LEDs are plug and play and connect on the back of the can while still ensuring that they withstand the elements. The mounting clamps are included and will mount to both factory and aftermarket cages.

The M0-65B speakers that come in the RZR14-STG1 and RZR14-STG2 are actually a less expensive, lower-priced speaker than the previous generations but better suited for the head unit that powers them. The speakers in the previous kits were too much speaker for the head unit. These M0-65B speakers are perfect for deck power. The M0-65B speakers have an open-style, dual 6-spoke grille, handle up to 65 watts RMS, and are not available with the RGB LEDs.

Neither the RZR14-STG1 nor RZR14-STG2 comes with an amplifier. Instead, the speakers get their power from the built-in amplifier in the radio. The "deck power" from the radio isn't comparable to the power of an external amplifier. If you want to add an amplifier down the road, you can, as the PMX-1 head unit has dual-zone RCA pre-outs. However, if you think you may want an amplifier, it is cheaper, easier, and better to go with the RZR14-STG3 or RZR14-STG4 now.

Neither of these kits comes with a subwoofer. The least expensive Rockford Fosgate RZR stereo kit with a subwoofer is the RZR14-STG3.

The PMX-1 is a great little head unit. It comes in both the RZR14-STG1 and the RZR14-STG2 and includes virtually everything you need in a UTV stereo. The PMX-1 has AM/FM/WB, a built-in amplifier to power the speakers, Bluetooth, AUX, and USB. The PMX-1 has everything that the PMX-2 has except for Pandora control, and the screen is different. The display on the PMX-1 is a 2.1" white and black dot matrix display, while the PMX-2 is a 2.7" full-color TFT display. The PMX-1 has a rotary volume control that is large enough to control while wearing gloves, allowing you to easily adjust volume while out riding. It comes with 2 zone, RCA pre-outs which allow you to easily add an amplifier down the road if you wish.
The harness that comes with the RZR-STG1 and RZR14-STG2 does not have the power harness for the amplifier. Instead, the speakers are powered off of the PMX-1 head unit. The harness included is still plug-and-play and provides all of the connections you need to wire the speakers to the head unit without having to cut, crimp, splice, twist, or tape. The RZR14-STG2 comes with a rear add-on harness for the tower speakers that plugs into the front speaker harness to deliver the power and signal to the rear, cage-mounted speakers.
The pricing between the two kits is pretty straightforward. If you want the rear, cage mounted speakers, you pay for them and they make up nearly 50% of the kit cost.
The decision between RZR14-STG1 and RZR14-STG2 comes down to whether or not you want rear speakers. If you have a 4 seat vehicle, the rear speakers will provide sound for the passengers in the back. Without an amplifier, they may struggle to hear the music with just the front two speakers. If you have a 2 seater, the RZR14-STG1 is probably the way to go. If you have a 2-seater and you want it louder, I like stepping up to the RZR14-STG3 versus adding two cage-mounted speakers in the rear.
Is RZR14-STG2 really worth it if I want more than just the two speakers? That's hard to say. The big advantage to RZR14-STG1 and RZR14-STG2 is the OEM appearance and a radio in your dash. If you don't care about either of those key features, you can probably get better sound for the money with an amplified soundbar that will play both louder and cleaner.
